When discussing dental health, most of us immediately think about our enamel—the hard, white outer layer of our teeth that we’re reminded to protect against dental cavities and dental erosion. However, there’s another crucial component of our teeth that plays an equally significant role in maintaining oral health: dentin.

What is Dentin?

Dentin is a calcified tissue beneath the enamel, forming the bulk of the tooth’s structure. It’s composed of microscopic tubules, which are channels that extend from the pulp (the innermost part of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels) to the outer surface of the tooth. Dentin is typically yellowish in colour and is responsible for giving teeth their strength and rigidity.

Why is Dentin Important?

  1. Support and Protection: Dentin acts as a support structure for the enamel, providing stability to the tooth. It’s like the scaffolding that holds up a building. Without a strong foundation of dentin, the enamel would be more prone to fractures and damage.
  2. Sensitivity: The dentin contains nerve endings that can transmit sensations of pain and discomfort. When the enamel is worn down or damaged, these nerve endings can become exposed, leading to tooth sensitivity. Protecting the dentin helps prevent sensitivity and ensures a more comfortable experience when consuming hot, cold, or acidic foods and beverages.
  3. Secondary Defense: While enamel is the primary defence against bacterial invasion, dentin serves as a secondary barrier. If bacteria manage to penetrate the enamel, they encounter the dentin next. Dentin contains minerals that can help neutralize acids produced by bacteria, slowing down the progression of decay and protecting the sensitive pulp beneath.
  4. Repair and Regeneration: Unlike enamel, which cannot regenerate once it’s lost, dentin has some capacity for repair and regeneration. Specialized cells called odontoblasts located near the pulp can produce new dentin in response to injury or decay. However, this process is slower and less efficient than enamel repair, making it essential to preserve as much dentin as possible.

How to Protect Dentin

  1. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Brushing your teeth twice daily with fluoridated toothpaste and flossing daily can help remove plaque and bacteria that can cause decay. This not only protects the enamel but also helps preserve the integrity of the dentin.
  2. Watch Your Diet: Limit consumption of sugary and acidic foods and beverages, as these can weaken enamel and increase the risk of dentin exposure. Choose a balanced diet rich in calcium and other nutrients that promote dental health.
  3. Use Fluoride: Fluoride strengthens enamel and can also penetrate into the dentin, making it more resistant to acid attacks. Using fluoride toothpaste and receiving professional fluoride treatments can help fortify both enamel and dentin.
  4. Address Grinding and Clenching: Bruxism or teeth grinding and teeth clenching will wear down enamel and expose dentin. Using a custom-made mouthguard at night can help protect teeth from these harmful habits and preserve the dentin.
  5. Regular Dental Check-ups: Routine dental visits allow your dentist to detect signs of decay or damage early and intervene before they progress. Professional dental cleanings also help to remove plaque and tartar buildup, protecting both enamel and dentin.

While enamel often takes the spotlight on dental health, dentin plays a vital supporting role. Protecting dentin through proper oral hygiene, dietary choices, and preventive measures is essential for maintaining strong, healthy teeth and a comfortable smile for years.
